A friend asked on facebook today how you develop such trust in God that not only will you be able to walk into a tornado, but you do it with ease, completely relaxed, becoming untouchable?
It’s a good question. When life gets busy, it’s hard to recognize the still, small voice of the Holy Ghost. It gets drowned out by the chaos in life.
This is what I replied: I think a big key is to practice – practice walking with God when the winds are still.
Learn to listen to and recognize the Holy Ghost when your life and your brain are calm and still. This will help you recognize him when the winds start to pick up.
You will be confident that you are still walking with God.
With that confidence, when the tornadoes come, you\’ll be like, “Dude, I got this.”
That still, small voice will have become your best friend, your constant companion, and you will be tuned into it\’s sound. Even the roaring winds of a tornado will not be able to drown it out.
You will be guided through the tornado knowing that you stand with God, and he will not let you get swept away.
I love the hymn “How Firm a Foundation”
- How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said—
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? - “Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand. - “When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with thee thy trouble to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. - “When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not harm thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine. - “The soul that on Jesus doth lean for repose,
I will not, I will not, desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.”
The hymn doesn’t talk about tornadoes. But it does talk about deep waters, rivers of sorrow, deep distress, and fiery trials. I feel comfortable tossing tornadoes into that list of trials.
The point stands, though. If you have that firm foundation on Christ, then no earthly calamity (physical, emotional, or otherwise) can harm you.
What do you think? What tools do you use when you are being thrown off by the tornadoes of life?
